Maya Feldman On:
A Novel in Nine Letters by Fyodor Dostoyevsky
This story was written by Dostoyevsky over the course of one night in 1847, probably because he desperately needed money. This is one of his earlier works – his first book was published only one year earlier – but there is no doubt that here is a small piece that has great significance. This correspondence is not only very funny but also demands detective-like skill from the reader; the plot of the story hides with malicious sophistication between the lines and needs to be assembled like a puzzle by interpreting the crafty writing of the correspondents – two villains who eventually get what they had coming to them.
